An interesting article on whether internet diffusion leads to the surpression or empowerment of civil society. They found that internet diffusion has been used to surpress civil society rather than empower it, but there are significant drawbacks to the data they used. Furthermore, GDP growth constrained civil society and increased censorship. Is this because of the high tech resources governments can access with wealth? How does this balance out with the civil sphere's access to digital media? Some questions for me to think about...
This paper proposed that unrecognised statehood is actually an ideal equilibrium to a zero sum game. The paper isn’t peer reviewed as of 2025, but it's an interesting and novel framework to consider unrecognised states in. If the paper was correct about unrecognised statehood being a desired outcome, then I think unrecognised states would have to stabilise overtime despite their status. However, I don’t know if I can find enough data on this because of the extreme variation among the small number of unrecognised countries in the world.
